Ketep Pass, Merapi Volcano Observation

Ketep Pass is the second most favourite tourist object in Magelang, Jawa Tengah after Borobudur Temple and Mendut Temple. This place was inaugurated by the fifth presiden of Indonesia, Megawati Sukarnoputri in 2002. This place is a post for observation of the activity of Mount Merapi. Mount Merapi is one of the most active vulcano among the others volcano that include in the circum pasific belt which extend from java, sumarta, himalaya in Asia, or most commonly called Ring of Fire.

Merapi itself is derrived from Javanesse word which means mountain on fire, or burn, or hot. According to the documentation exists, from 9 century, Merapi has errupted for more than 80 times. The last erruption recorded was in 2011. In average Merapi errupted once every 2 – 5 years. Ketep Pass which is currently become famous tourist object in Magelang, is actually the central control of Erruption of Merapi in Magelang Region and become an early warning of the danger of Erruption of Merapi.

Ketep Pass is located inside the Merapi National Park between Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu, at an altitude of 1200 m above sea level, approximately 30 km from Magelang city. This tourist object offers a green and fresh nature scenery. The view of Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu is clearly visible from this location, more over here visitors are able to see the others 3 mountain surrounding Merapi, like Mount Sindoro, Mount Sumbing, and Mount Slamet. Tidar Hill , Menoreh Hill, and Telomoyo Hill surrounds Magelang city could also be seen from here. Beside replica of the Mount Merapi, there also a series of log that tell the Merapi Volcano activity since the past which visitor may see in the Museum Vulcanologi. There is a Mini Theater inside the area where visitors able to wacth a documentary movie in short duration, approximately 25 minutes long. This film recorded all activity about Merapi.

The weather here is cool even though in Dry Season, but when it comes to Rainy Season it might litle cold. Please bring any jacket or sweater in case needed. There are some traditional shop offering Traditional drinks called Susu Jahe Hangat, warm Ginger Milk, this drink will make body warm and fresh. For accompany visitors also might enjoy a delicious Baked Corn provided by local people while seeing the beautiful scenery of the valley. If you have your own binocular that would be recomended. You could see a beautiful view surrouding the area. If you do not own one, there are some local people who provide Binocular Rent for an average price.
